PLAYHOUSE 395 ANNOUNCES
AUDITIONS FOR SPRING 2018 SHOW
Playhouse 395 is excited to announce auditions for its 2018 Spring show, Into the Woods. The stage rendition of this 1987 classic, written by James Lapine with music by Steven Sondheim, promises to have a lighthearted and fanciful approach to the wonderful story combining the fairy tales of Cinderella, Jack in the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, and the Baker and His Wife in a rather twisted and non-traditional manner, in contrast to the Disney movie released a few years ago. The story is funny, touching, clever, and maybe even a little bit scary as all the characters have to go into the woods to get their wishes. It is filled with magic, princesses, princes, peasants, giants, and a little more magic. It is a delight for audiences of all ages.
This year the audition process is going to be a little different than in the past in that Playhouse will be offering Audition Workshops on October 25 and November 1, so you can choose your preference. Workshops will be at 6 pm at the Bishop Union High School theater. These workshops will help prospective auditioners to find their vocal range, learn a little of the music, and learn important acting techniques needed for the show. Attending a Workshop is encouraged, especially for first-time auditioners. There is no dancing or large chorus in Into the Woods, so no one will need to learn a dance for auditions. Despite having a relatively small cast, Into the Woods has many parts with vocal solos and also requires strong acting skills. It also has several parts that although fun, would not require a large time commitment until the last few weeks of rehearsals. So those of you with busier schedules may find that this is just the show for you.
Auditions will be Saturday, November 4, with call backs Sunday, November 5. The first cast meeting will be Monday, November 6, all at the BUHS school theater. Although you can audition with a song of your choice, this year the directors are encouraging anyone seriously interested in a larger part to sing one of the songs from Into the Woods that is sung by the character for which they are auditioning. Songs, accompaniments, and sheet music are available online from various sources. They will also be available at the Workshops for downloading.
Character songs to be used at auditions are:
Cinderella: Steps of the Palace
Baker: No More
Baker's Wife: Moments in the Woods
Jack's Mother: Opening number, starting at 'There are bugs on her dugs', Jack, Jack, Jack or other soprano song
